Composure isn't about being emotionless. Composure is about staying steady and focused through the ups and downs. It’s the ability to reset after a mistake, block out distractions, and respond to challenges with clarity and confidence.

May’s Whole Athlete Training theme was Composure in Competition and we’re highlighting athletes who lead with calm, compete with purpose, and keep their cool no matter what’s on the line. Let’s meet the ones who are setting the standard for mental toughness in the heat of competition.

Trace Klausing - Advanced Academy

Nominated by Emi Holsclaw - A2 Associate Club Director

Trace is not only the captain and hardest worker on his team, always giving 100% in every rally and supporting his teammates after every play, but he is the one who stays calm, confident, and focused when the score gets tight or when calls aren’t going our way. He brings a composure and confidence from his years of hard work and extra private lessons, as well as his experience with USAV NTDP. Instead of getting angry or frustrated in the game or checking out, he faces tough times head on and channels his energy into the other side of the net, using his IQ to help his team find a way to score. He’s always bringing it into the middle and telling the team to focus on the next play and let go of errors. He also has a genuine love for the game that keeps him grounded.

Maggie Helle - Stars Carolina

Nominated by Alex Scharpenberg - Stars Carolina Assistant Volleyball Director

Maggie was the first athlete to come to mind for many of our staff members when we heard the phrase “composed and grounded during competition.” Maggie’s consistency not only with her game play, but with her energy and leadership has benefitted her and her teammates so much this season. Maggie treats every moment like the most important moment of her life, so she never gets rattled and no moment is too big or overwhelming for her. Maggie is also always willing to celebrate her teammates, and as soon as they break the huddle, she is geared towards what’s next.

Emma Peterson - Chi City

Nominated by Jamie Hoscheit, Chi City Director and Coach

Emma exemplifies composure and groundedness in competition through her consistent positivity, leadership, and resilience. She arrives at every practice with a smile, setting the tone for her teammates and demonstrating a steady presence. Even in high-pressure moments or after making multiple mistakes, Emma remains focused and supportive, always putting the team first. She is always willing to take feedback and will immediately adjust. Her ability to reset quickly and maintain a calm demeanor not only helps her perform at a high level, but also brings a sense of stability and confidence to everyone on the court. We can always count on Emma to bring out the best in her teammates and in herself, consistently, whether it's in practice or match play.

Avery Stewart - Iowa United

Nominated by Lauren Hansen - Iowa United Coach

Avery Stewart exemplifies what it truly means to stay composed and grounded during competition. As the Libero/DS for Iowa United 141 Elite, Avery is the steady heartbeat of our team—unshaken by pressure and unwavering in her focus. Whether we’re in the heat of 14 Open play or facing tough opponents, she brings a calm, confident presence that anchors our squad. Her voice is constant on the court, energizing and encouraging her teammates with every point. Avery doesn’t just play with skill—she leads with poise, maturity, and contagious energy that sparks momentum when we need it most. She’s a true example of leadership through composure.

Addie Cassidy - Roots

Nominated by Sierra Cortez, Roots 13-2 Blue Assistant Coach

Addie has preserved through this season's competition, fatigue, and adjustments tirelessly and with confidence. Addie has been our season's Team Captain and is a strong representative for her team in tumultuous times of navigating reffing calls and general competition woes. Addie brings a laser focused presence with her to the court and takes on her role as Captain and Outside Hitter with pride, focusing on motivating her teammates, game strategy and IQ, and willingness to adjust play no matter the situation.
